How to Design a Calm Bedroom for Better Rest: minimal line art of a bed in gold, emerald and sapphire

Your bedroom should be the calmest room in your home. Good design can make it easier to relax and wind down at night. Here's how to plan a bedroom that feels restful, from color and light to storage and textiles.

Start with a calm palette

Soft, muted colors usually feel more restful than bright, saturated ones. Popular choices include warm whites, soft greens, dusty blues, gentle taupes and earthy clays. Keep strong contrast to a minimum, and repeat two or three colors across walls, bedding and curtains.

Control the light

  • Blackout or lined curtains block streetlights and early sunrise. Hang them wide so they cover the window frame completely.
  • Layered evening light: bedside lamps with warm bulbs are gentler than a bright ceiling light.
  • Dimmers let you lower the light gradually in the evening.
  • Daylight in the morning: open curtains fully to let natural light in when you wake up.

Make the bed the star

  • Choose a bed frame that suits the room's size, with space to walk around at least two sides if you can.
  • Invest in a mattress and pillows that feel comfortable for you.
  • Natural, breathable bedding such as cotton or linen feels pleasant through the seasons.
  • Layer a throw and a few pillows, but not so many that making the bed becomes a chore.

Keep clutter out of sight

Visual clutter is hard to relax around. Use closed storage: a chest of drawers, under-bed drawers or a built-in wardrobe. Keep bedside tables to a lamp, a book and a glass of water.

Think about sound and air

Soft furnishings absorb sound: a large rug, upholstered headboard and heavy curtains all make a room quieter. Keep the room well ventilated, and choose a temperature that feels comfortable to you.

Leave work outside

If you can, keep desks and screens out of the bedroom. If space forces a desk in, choose one that can be closed or hidden behind a screen in the evening.

Finishing touches

  • A single calming artwork above the bed.
  • One or two plants that are easy to care for.
  • A soft rug where your feet land in the morning.

A calm bedroom is less about following trends and more about removing what disturbs you. Design for how you want to feel at the end of the day.
